[Gyeongju] Taking a step into ancient Korea

I know I say this many many times but I’ve really always wanted to visit Gyeongju for the longest time.

it is known for being the most ancient looking city in Korea and it is. I heard that they couldn’t build taller buildings because the country is trying to maintain Gyeongju’s ancient image.

IMG_2873 copy

there are a list of places to go to in Gyeongju which would require about 2-3 days to complete but since I only had one, and the weather was awful, I visited two of the most popular landmarks, Bulguksa 불국사 and Seok-gul-am 석굴암. they are located really close to each other but with snow piling so high, it is impossible to walk through the stairs from Bulguksa. I heard some people actually did walk up in the Summer but decided to take the taxi down because it is really such a walk. if you’re planning to take the cab, be reminded that it is actually very near, but far because the roads are winding. viewing the map through satellite is literally jaw dropping. [Seoul: Jongro] Gwangjang Market 광장시장

despite living only a few minutes away by bus from this magnificent market, it was my first time here in 2 years. or just, ever.

it has never hit me that market food can be so enjoyable. it is just simple food. every store selling the same thing, but then there are the “pioneers” and also the fakes. so as lucky as I was, I had a Korean to bring me around eating the 3 must eats in Gwangjang Market.

so the main eatery street is like above. it sells a variety of stuff and food but you come here for the food. not the stuff. unless you want to buy quilt. I heard it’s pretty reasonably priced here.

and look!!! makgeolli advertisement above! call me an alcoholic but I love my makgeolli. a lot. Continue reading “[Seoul: Jongro] Gwangjang Market 광장시장”

[Seoul: Sinchon] Choco Blossom

I love chocolate yes. but I do not usually drink hot chocolate. most places serve hot chocolate only nice for a few sips and it just gets really disgusting after that. but the ones here at Cherry Blossom is DA BOMB. I am not even kidding. it is so hard to explain. seriously.

because I can’t take coffee, I’ve always ordered chocolate drinks back in Malaysia whenever friends go to starbucks (and you know the other non-caffeine drinks are just so so.) which had contributed to me being sick of hot chocolate drinks.

when Jia Yii told me about this place I had doubts and I would really prefer something else like green tea latte. but I still gave it a shot anyway since he was really sure I was going to like it. and I did.

they have these amazing seats upstairs for you to lay down and it is perfect for couples. super duper romantic in my opinion hehehe. and because it is christmas they also placed these huge teddy bears on every seat. but the place is rather small so getting a place upstairs was some real luck. [Seoul: Dongdaemun] Dalg Han Mari 닭한마리

as much as I love food, there are certain Korean food that I’ve never tried because I thought that they’d taste bland or just food for those who can’t take spicy food or even something that I think that I might not like. basically I’d skip most things that doesn’t involve a little spice or pepper in it.

but little did I know, that the bland looking Dalghanmari (it means one chicken) actually has a adjustable spicy sauce! you can dip your bland looking chicken in that heavenly sauce and it is just.. purrrrfect.

CIMG3573 copy

so the place I went to is called 진옥화할매 닭한마리 Jin Ok Hwa Hal Mae Dalg Han Mari located at Dongdaemun. if you’d ask me how to get there again, I don’t think I can get there without my phone’s GPS. it’s located at some secluded area where you’d never guess that there’s restaurants filled with people. we walked pass the first Dalghanmari shop and it was packed. but my friend told me that I must go for the second one.. where there’s even a line outside. [Seoul: Hyehwa] PURE GOROKE (CLOSED)

because that is how 순결한 고로케 is directly translated into, PURE Goroke. goroke, or gorokke or koroke, is actually Japanese. fried on the outside and something soft and yummy on the inside. it can be cheese, goguma (sweet potato), vegetables.. you name it. it is normally round and so super delicious. I can never get enough. for a fussy person on fried food, I personally love koroke because they are usually not too oily and it is fried to perfection.

(many tourists may thing that eating Japanese food in Korea is an utter waste of time and money but believe me, this is totally going to be worth it.)

혜화/대학로 길거리에서 파는 순결한 고로케 정말로 글로 표현할 수 없는 정도로 맛있습니다!

Sungkyunkwan University During Autumn.

to be honest, it is quite embarrassing to be a tourist in your own school where chances of bumping into a friend is so much higher than anywhere else.

but I put on a thick face and did it anyway. thank goodness for the smaller camera or else people would stare more if I were to pull out my gun-like DSLR.

CIMG2846 copy

look at how pretty my school is right now! my school isn’t the prettiest schools around but currently Yonsei is under construction so only a few parts of it remains pretty. I would say Kyunghee and Korea University would be the prettiest (and they are both so near my uni!) but I am too lazy (no time pfft) to go to any =S. I am even lazy to stroll around my school compound. but today, I finished my quizzes and thought I should take a good walk around while waiting for Wai Kit for our lunch date which was an hour and a half away. and I pretty much got carried away. [Seoul: Hangang] Autumn

HELLO EVERYONE!!! so my mom got me a new camera because the last time she asked me why don’t I take pictures anymore I told her that my DSLR is a little too heavy to carry every where when I need to carry a lot of other stuff. so WITHOUT asking for my opinion, she just bought me a camera. I was so upset because it isn’t a Canon camera (I know, such a bad daughter). BUT……. gracious. I LOVE THIS CAMERA. I won’t go back to Canon for digital cameras. NEVER!

Sister’s Pre-Wedding Shoot.

so a few days ago my sister, her boyfriend and my mom came to visit me! =D. and as much as I can do, I organized a pre-wedding shoot for my sister since she just got engaged the week before! out of all the people I’ve known in Korea, this Malaysian guy called Max has done wedding photography before and it was beautiful. although during our shoot the weather was horribly gloomy and it was raining throughout the shoot, we still managed to survive it.

PS : pictures with my watermark in this post are taken with my new S4. can’t get enough of this phone. love its camera!

August: Food, Bukchon, Food, M.Net.

my title pretty much sums up my whole post for today. since I am having my exams soon so I have not been going out T_T. hence I will need to blog about stuff that are way overdue where I’ve been saving them as fillers anyway. =D. on August, my best friend, Megumi came to visit! I was so glad because we hadn’t met since March when we graduated T_T. she left right after our graduation ceremony le sigh.

IMG_3873 copy

we went for Japanese food after a few rounds of Korean food. the silliest thing is that Megumi insisted on going for Fukuoka food when she’s from Fukuoka! because I love the restaurant and she wanted to have Japanese food with me since we’ve never had it together before. but she said it’s good even for a Fukuokan standard so no regrets haha.
