what to pack for studying overseas?

its less than 3 weeks away so I MUST be myself; the paranoid girl who gets things done early!

the MUST BRINGS would be :
Passport (settled Visa 2 months ago. phew.)
Money (enough to survive for a week.)
Laptop (with charger)
Camera (with charger)
Pin adapter to suit the country you’re going to.
Toothpaste (in my case, Korea’s toothpaste has no FLOURIDE and I do not want no tooth decay!)
Deodorant (because it’s not a Korean need. Koreans all smell awesome. that’s what I heard.)

and now some stuff you can’t live without :
CLOTHES! since I’m leaving for the Spring there, I’ll need something warm.
Coats
SCARFS (a lot of them! change a scarf and you’d look diff.)
Long Johns
Autumn clothes
Formal clothing (1)
Nice dress (1)
Pyjamas (3)
Socks (I only need a few because Korea is the land of socks.)
Lingerie (a years worth because it’s super expensive there and lack of design and size bigger than A/B. wth)
Towel (ours are always huger. 2.)
Pillow case (prefer to use my own.)
Bed sheets (prefer my own. you can buy a cartoon bolster there though hehe)
Accessories (your favourite necklace, bracelet, watch….)
a little make up (Korean make up are around 50% cheaper there than here)
Toothbrush
Sport shoes
Boots (and I’ll get the others there!)
Medication (if have)
Aloe Vera gel (my Korean friend bought TUBES of it back. so you know what to do.)
MAGGI (incase you miss home)
Milo/Ribena (same reason. but milo is available in Itaewon. mad price though.)

and here are some stuff you can definitely get in Korea, CHEAP. :
MAKE UP
Facial masks
Summer clothes
COTTON! (walk though MyeongDong and you’d prolly get it free!)
Cotton buds are also available =D.

I think this is all for now. to tell you the truth. I am still packing. care to list out what I’ve missed to help me? =/.

many many posts about korean coffee shops, please. :)
you’re going to study what? you’ll be like natalie chai? i’m jelly jelly! :P

my suggestion: flashlight/s (plus batteries). a small one so you can always put it in your purse. you’ll never know when it might come in handy. there probably are flashlights sold in korea, but you might forget to buy.. because you’re in (wonderful) korea and the last thing you’ll probably think of is buying a flashlight, hahaha.
and pepper spray, too. just to be on the safe side. ^^

    Jamie Liew Reply:

oh you’re nat’s reader? xD. something like that. haha. why flashlight? D=. I don’t know about pepper spray. the last time my sister went to HK with it she got surrounded by a group of police in the terminal @@”.. it’s illegal there =S. Korea is pretty safe no worries!

sort of? i read her post about meeting khun in a subway in korea. then i read all her posts about SK. that’s just about it. :)
hmm yeah, you do have a point about the pepper spray.
flashlight. it’s perfect for when it’s dark and you have to fish something out of your bag, or when you’re walking home then suddenly all the lights in the area blow out (as to why this would ever happen, idk). :P

1 week of cash is definitely not enough, considering the need to open a local bank acc, and you might neeed all the proper documents before you able to open one. And it takes days to recieve bank card and also password for your debit card.

if you have malaysian friends there, ask them about cooking ingredients which are common in malaysia but deemed exotic in korea. So you can bring them some? Cooking malaysian food in overseas can be quite daunting, at least if you plan to cook.

Going to a place to travel and study are two totally different things all together. Please read some tips on settling down in foreign land too.

lastly, bring an open, curiousity, enthusiatic and adventurous mind. Enjoy this opportunity.

    speaking from experience. :)

    Jamie Liew Reply:

crap then I will have to carry loads of cash then! D= scary. I heard from many of my friends that they opened a bank account the very next day. but oh well, just in case I guess. =S. I will be living in a home stay so I don’t have problem with that hehehe. just packs of milo! I’m pretty prepared! just afraid that I might leave anything out! thanks a lot!

  13. insertnamehere Says:

hello :) is it okay to ask which university/where are you going to just study Korean? :)

    [Reply]

    Jamie Liew Reply:

    Yonsei =).

    [Reply]

    insertnamehere Reply:

just I have thought! :D I did look up the website and there’s only 10 weeks program (max)? is the 1-year program only applicable for those who are going to study other course at the university after the language course?

    [Reply]

    insertnamehere Reply:

oh wait. it’s per term xD (did I get that right?)
add. note : you might need a hairdryer! I’m studying abroad too and I have a salon-typed hairdryer, which is very useful in winter season, especially you have super long hair :D

    Jamie Liew Reply:

actually you can apply for the 1 year course if you want too but its such a waste if you don’t continue degree because the language program in yonsei is certainly NOT cheap and the living expenses is super high in seoul especially if you live in the yonsei dorm =S. thanks for the tips but I think I’ll have to buy it there.. hair dryers are SO HEAVY!!
