I’m addicted to Kimchi.
Sunday, January 27th, 2008Since the very first time I had korean BBQ in Genting Highlands ( It’s not there anymore, heard it shifted to gohtong jaya or something ) when I’m 12, I began to love Korean food. Before that, I don’t even know how Korean food look like! But the way they marinate the meat, the flavours of all their stews really turned on my taste buds! I remember I grew up with Japanese food, Japanese animations and Japanese origami, and then my mom took me to a Korean restaurant for a change. And now I love Korean food, Korean drama’s and Korean clothes. And now, my mom is sick of taking me to Korean restaurants every time!
And now, coincidently I know somebody who’s Korean ( my sun seng nim!) and his mother is like one of the best Korean cooks here in Malaysia! BUT, the saddest thing is that his mom wants to go back to Korea and the restaurant will no longer have such a good cook T_T.
Kimchi!
About Kimchi, (I’ll just tell what I know =P) it is a traditional Korean fermented dish made of vegetables (usually cabbage) with some seasonings ( onions, ginger, etc. ) served as a side dish/banchan and is really popular too. I’ve never had any korean meals that doesn’t serve kimchi. It’s sour and spicy, crunchy too! But not ALL kimchi might suit your taste buds as there is over 200 or is it 300 types of different kimchi. One of my favorite Korean dish made with kimchi is “Kimchi Jjigae” in english, it’s “Kimchi stew”, it is to be said that it is more tastier if the kimchi is older. But to Malaysians, most of us might think the fresher stuffs tastes better. Kimchi jjigae especially with noodles tastes really good!
Bulgogi <3
“Bulgogi” also one of the popular Korean food, are thin slices of marinated beef in soy sauce and sesame oil and is cooked on a dome-shaped grill. It’s also served like stew with green onions and so on and is REALLY REALLY delicious! Totally a dish you cannot miss.
Galbi
And there’s “galbi” (beef ribs). It’s almost the same with bulgogi other than it is cooked on a grill. have to try it too! It’s also served with mushrooms and onions, and it’s yummy too!
Bibimbap before it’s mixed
Bibimbap after it’s mixed
“Bibimbap” is good to0! it’s assorted vegetables, mushrooms and meat, gotta mix it before you eat it! =P
Samgyeopsal
“Samgyeopsal” known as bacon, is marinated and cooked like galbi, and it’s really nice when you have it with rice and the sweet soy sauce with some chilli powder!
Deonjang Jjigae
Also not to forget, “deonjang” !! it’s korean bean paste, when you mix it with liquid, it becomes deonjang jjigae if I’m not mistaken, but when you mix it with some korean chilli paste, it becomes a really nice sauce/paste to eat along with galbi.
Kimbap
“Kimbap” is actually something like sushi roll. It’s er.. physically the same to me but tastes different in some way. =)
Sannakji
Will update more about korean food when I get to try MORE of it. Can’t wait to try the “Sannakji”! It’s live squid, still moving. But I’m afraid of it at the same time >_<. All these I recommend here totally suit my taste!
ps : pictures on top taken from Wikipedia. =)
