MEXICO

recently discovered this place while walking around Gwanghwamun in search for a good restaurant and uh.. well, this place has the highest rating in a Korean foodie app so I thought I’d give it a try. they mainly sell eel, but they also sell many other things like mini octopuses, pork, chicken feet, pig’s skin, huge prawns… but most of them are spicy. the best dish there’s the eel so you don’t have to consider anything else if you’re visiting for the first time haha.

when I arrived it was around 730/800 and I queued for around 30minutes. the queue may look long but it moves relatively fast. I have ever since visited this place 3 times and if you do not want to queue up then I would advise you to arrive before 6pm because after that the queue gets a little long.

they pre-cook everything for you and the coal on your table is generally to heat up your food. but beware of burning the rice cakes! so I’d advise you to eat all the rice cakes first.

so once seated they serve you this clear (spicy) soup and your drinks. this eel goes really well with beer and soju so I’d recommend getting them both!

as a side, we ordered the house-famous kimchi kalguksu. if you’re from Malaysia, I’d say it tastes like kimchi panmee. but gosh, this dish tastes so so on the first few bites but gradually gets better and better and trust me, if you love food, you’d finish everything to the last drop of the soup.

went with my derp who doesn’t take much spicy food but still enjoyed it nevertheless. *smirks* the Koreans say that eels are great for men *smirks even more*

something I really like about this store is because they give you a lot of raw onions to wrap with your eel. it only makes it taste better. like seriously.

did you know, that kimchi was ORIGINALLY white like the picture above? red kimchi came pretty recently. but basically everything red in Korean food because previously they didn’t like how red resemble blood or something. but anyways, this kimchi is actually to help tone down the spiciness of the eel.

and finally the eel arrives! now look at that!! as you can see, there isn’t a lot for a 2 people portion. so you should either order those noodles, the bento or the jjambab to make you full. the bento is very simple with just rice, kimchi and something else I forgot. and jjambab is just rice mixed with some veges and spicy sauce.

now don’t this look great or what? the eel here is different because since its really fresh its actually really crunchy! And because they are baby eels you wouldn’t feel the bones and the marination is just a work of art! super spicy but super stress relieving!

I would recommend the kimchi kalguksu if it’s your first visit. the portion is huge so please don’t order one for each person!

this is how your “ssam” or wrap is supposed to look like. I especially like the taste of perilla leaves with spicy food. but because the strong taste of the leave, some may just prefer lettuce.

drink some beer/soju and then pop this wrap in your mouth for the ultimate orgasmic experience =D.

I really loved this place for its hole-in-the-wall feel and also the ultimate satisfaction you can actually get from food. so if you love spicy food like me, I’d highly recommend this place to you!

it’s located near Jonggak station and Jogyesa Temple. I actually walked over from Anguk station after visiting Insadong and it’s only a stone throw away! the diagonal line on the map is Insadong by the way!
